It is anticipated that a general election for the 288 members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will take place in 2024. The results of the election will determine Maharashtra’s next government.
Maharashtra’s previous Assembly elections took place in October 2019. After the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance NDA won a majority, internal strife caused the Shiv Sena to break away and form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a new alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and the Indian National Congress. Eknath Shinde, a politician from the Shiv Sena, and forty MLAs formed a government with the BJP after the political crisis in Maharashtra in 2022, and Shinde was appointed chief minister.
In the general election of 2024 in India, the INDIA alliance made significant gains. This state election will determine whether or not the momentum from the national election continues.
For the impending assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen to keep the status quo in place regarding its leadership in Maharashtra. The choice was made during a meeting of the Maharashtra BJP core group that included Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda. A plan for the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP alliance to win the assembly elections is being developed by the BJP[3].
In the general elections of 2024, there was a mere 0.3 percent difference in the vote share of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the ruling Mahayuti (BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP). The BJP went into great detail about their electoral setbacks, issues, and necessary remedial measures[3].
